Police were searching Monday for a man suspected of firing a gun Sunday night near an apartment building in Ellsworth.

Aaron Wagner, 41, of Ellsworth fired the gun, shattering the rear window of a vehicle with several people inside, police said.

He is wanted by police for reckless conduct with a firearm and aggravated criminal mischief. Police said he is wearing a yellow jacket and red boots. He has long blond hair.

The Associated Press reported that the town’s school superintendent closed public schools Monday as a precautionary measure during the manhunt.

Police said that Wagner fled on foot after shooting at the car. He was spotted a few hours later on Route 1A by an off-duty police officer.

Two Massachusetts men have been arrested in connection with the killing of a 31-year-old man in Aroostook County this month, Maine State Police said Tuesday.

Douglas Morin of Oakfield was found dead in his car on Lower PD Road in Sherman on Oct. 16.

Being held in connection with Morin’s killing are Marcus Asante, 20, of Fitchburg, Massachusetts, and Darin Goulding, 27, whose hometown isn’t known, said Stephen McCausland, spokesman for the Maine Department of Public Safety.

Asante was taken into custody on an unrelated charge on Friday, and Goulding was arrested Tuesday in Leominster, Massachusetts.

Both men are being held on fugitive from justice charges and will be extradited to Maine, where they will be charged with murder, McCausland said in a news release.

Thieves steal catalytic converters from students’ cars on UMaine campus

University of Maine police are investigating the thefts of car parts from students’ vehicles on the Orono campus.

University Police Chief Ronald Lacroix told WLBZ-TV Friday that thieves stole catalytic converters out of at least nine cars parked in campus parking lots over the weekend, and reports are still coming in.

Officials believe the thieves went underneath older-model cars from the years 1998-2004 and sawed the parts out of the vehicles. They were reportedly Hondas, Acuras and Chevrolets.

Thieves target the converters, which are specialized portions of a car’s exhaust system, because they contain small amounts of precious metals such as platinum, palladium and rhodium – which are chemically related and are members of the platinum group – that can be sold at scrapyards.

Typical converters can sell for between $10 or $20 and more than $100, depending on how much of the precious material is inside, said Brandon Lerman, operations manager at E. Perry Iron, a Portland metal recycling company.

Although each of the precious metals inside the converter still sells for between $600 and nearly $1,000 per ounce, those prices were even higher in pre-recession years, before about 2007. The decline is in large part because of the economic slowdown in China that has put downward pressure on many metal prices.

The converter is a legally required piece of equipment that converts noxious hydrocarbon fumes into less harmful substances that are then emitted from the tailpipe.

In the Portland area, two such thefts have been reported in the last week, according to Yarmouth police.

Both of those cases, on Oct. 23 and Oct. 24, focused on early-model Hondas, said Yarmouth police Lt. Dean Perry. Several other police departments in southern Maine said that such thefts seem to come in waves, but they had not received any reports recently.

The replacement of the converters can be a costly repair, ranging from several hundred dollars to over $1,000, depending on the vehicle.

Westbrook teen reported missing

Westbrook police are looking for a 14-year-old girl who went missing Thursday night or Friday morning.

Jaedyn Smith was last seen by her mother Thursday night at 11:30 p.m., but was gone when her mother went to wake her up for school Friday morning.

Smith has brown hair and blue eyes, weighs about 115 pounds and stands about 5-foot 4-inches tall. She has long hair and pierced ears. She was last seen wearing black leggings, black sneakers and a gray top with a palm tree on it. There was an unconfirmed sighting of her near Westbrook High School around noon, police said. She was reported missing about 1 p.m. Friday.

Westbrook Police Captain Steve Goldberg said Smith has a history of leaving her house without permission, but in this case, none of her friends had heard from her.

“Our concern is that we don’t know if this is a 14-year-old being rebellious or there is more going on,” Goldberg said. “If there is something serious, we will deal with it, or if it’s a parental issue, so be it, and we can leave it at that level.”

Anyone with information about Smith’s whereabouts should contact the Westbrook Police at 854-0644, ext. 1.

This story will be updated.

A pedestrian and a Livermore Falls police car collided Friday night, sending the pedestrian to the hospital, where he was listed in critical condition Saturday.

The Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident with help from the Lewiston police, initially reported that the police cruiser, which was headed south on Park Street in Livermore Falls, hit Joseph Slaver. Later Saturday, William Gagne, the office’s chief deputy, said in an email that Slaver “struck” the passenger side of the cruiser, damaging the car’s front fender, A-pillar and the area around the mirror on the passenger side.

Attempts Saturday to reach Gagne for a further explanation of the incident were unsuccessful.

Crashes involving police cars are usually investigated by police from jurisdictions other than the one involved in the crash.

Slaver was taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston with injuries from the crash and was reported in critical condition Saturday.

The Livermore Falls police cruiser was driven by officer Troy Reed.

Lobstering turf war off Maine coast brings offer of $15,000 reward

$

More than $350,000 worth of lobster gear has been damaged and lost since early summer in a bitter Down East trap war that’s being fought in the waters between Deer Isle and Mount Desert Island, prompting state marine patrol officials to offer a $15,000 reward for information that will help in their investigation.

“This trap war is without a doubt the most costly loss of gear I have witnessed in my 32-year career with the Maine Marine Patrol,” said Col. Jon Cornish of the Department of Marine Resources.

The vandalism began in early summer off Newbury Neck in Surry and has escalated in recent weeks, according to the agency’s commissioner, Patrick Keliher. As many as 15 lobstermen who haul traps along the line between two of the state’s lobster management zones are believed to be involved in the conflict, in which lobstermen cut the surface buoys marking a competitor’s traps. Keliher said he has approved overtime and additional vessels to work on the investigation.

Closing a lobster fishing zone because of a turf war would be unprecedented, but Keliher said he was prepared to take that step if necessary.

“I don’t want to take an action that could potentially penalize law-abiding harvesters,” he said, “but I am committed to preventing this from escalating even further.”

Three lobstermen already have been charged with “trap molesting” this year in other cases, said Jeff Nichols, director of communications for the marine resources agency. Two have had their licenses suspended, and one suspension is pending, he said. Trap molesting is a civil violation that may come with a fine ranging from $100 to $500.

The $15,000 reward is being put up by Operation Game Thief, a privately funded nonprofit that raises money for rewards offered in cooperation with state agencies. Last February, Operation Game Thief offered an $11,000 reward in a case where someone was raising traps near Jeffrey’s Ledge, in the western Gulf of Maine, that belonged to someone else. No charges have been filed in that case.

The territorial dispute is occurring along the line that separates Maine lobster zones B and C. Zone B extends from Schoodic Point to Newbury Neck, and Zone C stretches from Newbury Neck to Cape Rosier.

Patrice McCarron, executive director of the Maine Lobstermen’s Association, called the trap line cutting “an extremely significant enforcement issue.”

She said the group is glad that lobstermen can use the Operation Game Thief anonymous tip line to assist the investigation without jeopardizing the loss of any of their own gear.

“These are really tough issues for people to talk about because if they’re not involved, they don’t want to get their gear cut,” she said.

John Williams, a longtime lobsterman from Stonington, said he has fished the disputed area before, but doesn’t any longer. He wasn’t aware of the current escalation of troubles, but said trap wars have been going on there for probably 100 years. There are about 50 residents of Stonington who fish that area, he said, and about the same number from towns east of Stonington.

Williams, who had his trap lines cut about three decades ago, said the $15,000 reward is “a great idea.”

“It’s not a good feeling when you go out to haul your gear and it’s not there,” Williams said. “You may have a suspicion (about who did it), but what do you do?”

Williams said lobster traps cost about $100 each, so for a lobsterman who fishes a typical 800 traps, losing 200 of them is “a big deal.”

He said the lines that demarcate lobster management zones are supposed to be used for voting purposes – for example, how many traps can you fish in your zone? But over the years those voting lines have become “fishing lines.” He said he hopes the younger generation can be taught that “the person on the other side of the line is not your enemy.”

“It doesn’t solve any problems,” Williams said of the rampant trap line cutting. “I don’t understand the mentality of it, I really don’t.”

Anyone with information can call the Operation Game Thief Hotline at (800) 253-7887; out-of-state callers should dial 287-6057. Information also can be provided through an online tip reporting form.

Bangor couple who let drug dealers use their home sentenced to prison

A couple from Bangor were sentenced to prison Monday for allowing drug dealers to store heroin and sell it from their home.

Daniel Lyons, 42, and Laura Lyons, 31, were given heroin in exchange for hosting the illicit operation for most of 2014, U.S. Attorney Thomas E. Delahanty II said in a news release.

Daniel Lyons was sentenced to three years in prison and Laura Lyons was sentenced to two years. Both were ordered to undergo three years of supervised release after their release.

Both pleaded guilty earlier this year to maintaining a drug-involved premise. Their home was in a trailer park.

According to the prosecution, the married couple rented, used and maintained their home at 979 Essex St. for use by drug dealers, who stored and sold heroin to people in the area. They had a child living with them at the time, though court records do not indicate how old the child was.

“Customers routinely came to the residence, met with the heroin dealers, obtained heroin in the residence and left,” Delahanty said in court documents. “These transactions occurred on a daily basis over a prolonged period of time.”

Prosecutors identified the drug dealers who used the Lyonses’ home as being from New York.

Woman struck by car on Forest Avenue suffered head injury, police say

A woman who was struck by a car on Forest Avenue near the University of Southern Maine campus Tuesday morning suffered a serious head injury, police said.

The woman, identified as Brittany Weston, 23, of Portland is being treated for life-threatening injuries at Maine Medical Center, according to a statement from the Portland Police Department. Her condition was not immediately known.

Weston was attempting to cross Forest Avenue when she was struck at about 8:29 a.m. by a minivan operated Lukas Rosov, 35, of Portland, the police statement said. Weston was not in a crosswalk.

The speed limit along that stretch of Forest Avenue is 30 mph, but speed is not considered a factor in the crash.

Police spokesman Lt. Robert Martin said Rosov was given a blood alcohol test, which is standard for cases involving injury. The driver has not been cited, but police are still investigating.

Anyone that may have witnessed the accident is encouraged to contact the Portland police at (207) 874-8532 or (207) 874-8575

Teen runaway dies; boyfriend is expected to face murder charge in Oklahoma

Collette Boure, the 17-year-old from Standish who ran away from home with her boyfriend in October, died Monday night at a Texas hospital from injuries sustained in a car crash after a police chase.

Her boyfriend, Alexander Meyers, who was driving the car when it crashed, is expected to be charged with second-degree murder in the death, Oklahoma authorities said.

The death was confirmed by a relative of Boure Tuesday morning.

“She will be an organ donor,” said Stacey Grindel, Boure’s stepmother.

Mark Matloff, the district attorney for the Oklahoma counties in which the chase and crash took place, said Meyers was held overnight in juvenile detention, and had been charged as a juvenile with felony eluding.

But now that Boure has died, Matloff said he will petition the court to change Meyers’ status to juvenile offender and to charge him with second-degree murder. Changing his offender status means Meyers could be sentenced to 10 years to life in prison if he is convicted.

Matloff said he expects the case to be expedited because Meyers will be tried in the juvenile justice system, which is a more streamlined process than the adult courts.

Boure’s aunt, Jonna Boure, of Fort Fairfield, said Tuesday that her sister – the girl’s mother, Madeline – is distraught over the death, which came after years of legal sparring over custody of Boure, who lived at different times with different relatives.

Jonna Boure said her sister has had persistent mental health issues that complicated her ability to care for her daughter, triggering the custody dispute, but that at no time did anyone stop looking for ways to support Collette, Jonna Boure said.

“(Collette) was very loved,” Jonna Boure said. “She wasn’t estranged. She was kept away in some ways. I want people to know that she was loved, and that we did care a lot about her, and we reached out to her when we could.”

Boure was first reported missing from Maine Oct. 13, and Meyers was reported missing Oct. 21.

They had been dating for about a year and were believed to be in southern Maine traveling in a car that belonged to a relative.

No one in either family knew that Boure and Meyers left the state until they received word early Monday morning from police that the teenagers had been involved in a high-speed police chase in southeast Oklahoma near the Texas border.

Police said the teens were traveling west on State Route 70 through Idabel, Oklahoma, when a local police officer attempted to stop them for speeding.

Instead of pulling over, the car accelerated, leading police on a 40-mile chase in excess of 100 mph.

Officers in the nearby town of Hugo were waiting for the teens, and when the car approached, the car took some type of evasive maneuver, leading to the crash, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol, which is investigating the crash.

Although Meyers, who was driving, escaped unharmed, Boure suffered massive injuries, and was flown by helicopter to Christus St. Michael’s Hospital in Texarkana, Texas.

A call to Meyers’ mother, Jennifer, was not immediately returned Tuesday morning. She had previously declined to comment on Monday, before Boure’s death.

Stacy Lary, Boure’s paternal grandmother, said neither Meyers nor her granddaughter had a driver’s license.

Lary said she helped raise Boure, especially during the years when Michael Grindel – Lary’s son and Boure’s father – was finishing college.

After Grindel graduated and got an apartment, he took custody of Boure again. Boure’s mother, Madeline Boure, had been estranged from her daughter for years, family members said.

When Grindel got married and had more children, Lary said Collete struggled to adapt, despite the best efforts of her father and stepmother.

“Collette being a teenager would test the boundaries, and that’s where some of the issues came in,” Lary said.

It was the usual teenage problems, Lary said, “not doing things that she’s supposed to be doing, not being where she was supposed to be, taking off and not telling anyone where she would be.”

Stacey Grindel said she and her husband worked hard to love Boure and help her through some of her problems.

“As a stepparent, you love them like they’re your own,” Stacey Grindel said. “I hope she knows that. My family loved her like she was my biological child.”

As she grew up, Boure became more rebellious, Lary said.

Some of the discipline issues accelerated when Boure met Meyers last year, and Boure asked to live with her mother in Windham, where she thought she would be freer from parental rules, Lary said.

Boure had recently gotten in trouble after she and Meyers, a lobsterman, were caught by the Maine Marine Patrol trying to steal a boat so Meyers could fish his lobster traps, Lary said.

In a deal with the courts that kept Boure from house arrest, Lary helped place Boure in a program in Lewiston for troubled teens and had been hoping to get Boure into a program that teaches teenagers to become independent so that she could move out on her own, but Boure rejected that idea, Lary said.

A short time later, Boure ran away with Meyers, she said.

“She was just bright and funny and beautiful, and broken,” Lary said. “I think she was angry at the whole world.”

Rockland mother to avoid jail time after toddler found in ditch

ROCKLAND — Police say a Rockland woman whose 3-year-old son wandered away from home and ended up in a drainage ditch has pleaded guilty.

WMTW-TV reports that Mandy Dennison received a deferred disposition last week, meaning some charges will be removed from her court record if she stays out of trouble.

Police said her son was found in a ditch in April.

Police found Dennison in an apartment with the door open and the TV showing “Scooby Doo,” which the youngster said he’d been watching before he wandered outside.

A Knox County prosecutor said Dennison can avoid jail time if she continues counseling and following Department of Health and Human Services rules for the next year. Then the child endangerment charge will be dropped, and she’ll be fined for drug possession.
